hi I read your write up on the konkani language. well I'm a christian from mangalore and speak konkani as my mother tongue although I do not know how to write in the language. However, regarding the script I do think that konkani should be written in roman. Taking the example of basha the language spoken in Indonesia. It has really helped the language grow. although your arguments regarding the use of the devanagari script are well founded I think that roman would be best taking in consideration that english has become a global language. The writting of konkani in roman will help it grow technologiclly.

it was very nice to see such an educating site , a gentle and sincere effort comes through . What i don't get is ... to be very candid 'where is the moolah in this ?'. a man got to earn his bread right ? well i am presently in the ge power systems in albany . plan to quit the job for something more interesting , rich and IT realted . To earn and deliver quality in some sphere ... not decided as yet , but seems its going to be through the net . My brother in india proposed this site as good sites to learn from . finally and most importantly i have done my MS in environmetal engineering from SUNY Syracuse. Something needs to be done for the depleting forest cover in india too , no ? keep up the good work bye and all the best

What a pleasure to see such a well designed beautifully thought out site on India. till now i have been sadly disappointed in most others except khoj.

i wonder if u have any information on ghost stories in Kannada, both in folklore and in your rich literature, as my colleagues and i r are collecting material from all over India.

if we publish any information u furnish us with we will ask yr permission and acknowledge yr contribution/s.

if this is not possible for u to do we would be grateful if u could advise us as to whom to ask.

our material will be prepared in english. we would like to know whom to apply to for both permission and copyright as well along with the information.

i would also like to add that i have travelled quite a bit in Karnataka when i was younger, and always loved it.I hope it still retains some of its old world charm.

we hope to hear from you.thank you for this super site. i am sorry to use the guest book as a means to communicating more than just my appreciation, but could not find an e-mail to contact u on.i hope this wasn't oversight on my part.

I am a Dharawadiga and I have read most of the travellogues written by Dr.Krishnanand Kamat. As you can see my name is Rangoly with a Why. I'm French West indian and was born in Martinique where there is a melting pot of ethnies Some people come from india but the indian culture is not really part of Martiniuqe culture so thanks to Internet I try to know more about India and to see if my name has something to do with India. When i went to England I met an indian doctor who told me about a Rangoli festival in Indian then the same year I met someone who told me about the Rangoli patterns I found it quite interesting to know if the why make the difference or if my ancestors where Indian which will not surprise me. I found your site of gre&at interest. The Internet is really a great invention to know more about others culture.

Your web site is excellent and I admire all the hard work yo've put into it. But I wondered about the picture of the tribal woman of Bastar showing her bare breast. I thought this was not acceptable in India? In modern India, I mean. The pictures of medieval women all show them bare-breasted. How India has changed!

Your Kala Ranga Time line is completely incorrect. Please get the correct information about the events of the Subcontinent before publishing it. You should be aware of the new NASA satellite data about the Saraswati River which dried up around 2700 B.C. This places the Vedas before 2700 B.C. and eleminates the need for Aryan Invation which was conjured up be the British to inslave the Indians. There never was an Aryan Invasion. If you need references, I shall be glad to provide them.

Interesting! I used to take some interest in understanding the language and the regional differences. Uniting the konkanis into a single group is an uphill task! In D.K. & Udipi, perhaps, the matter would have been easier if same efforts were made to combine literary efforts from all groups, particularly, the Christians & Hindu Konkanis. I have listened to Konkani spoken by people of various regions and have best liked it the way it is spoken by Goans, followed by SK Saraswats. I tend to agree that the way it is spoken by canra christians is distorted. However, we must grant it to canara christians for their efforts in konkani literature and arts, despite limitations of much learning in linguistics and literature. My opinion itself is based on deficient knowledge of the subject. If time permits I wish to read more about the language and the origin of Konkani. If we all do unite, we sure have an excellent opportunity to develop the language in a scientific manner, avoiding the negatives of other languages. The words borrowed from other languages can be used to enrich the language as it has enriched English. Although devanagari is most suitable for Konkani, use of Roman script should be considered with open minded debate. One advantage could be easy adaptation to computers. May be we can beat the other Indian languages to it! Gerry

My ancestors (grandparents) migrated to malaysia along time ago.Malaysia has a very minute nayaka community, less than 70 families.By oral tradition passed to us, we were told that we are related to the nayaka kings of karnataka.I understand that most of the nayaka kings in south India are related.Vijayanagar kings (Vira Narasimha and Krishna Deva Raya),s father Narasa Nayaka was from west karnanaka( tulu nadu ).Dr Kamat, the nayaka community in malaysia would be gratefull to you if you could put information about the nayaka kings, how the nayaka kings are related to the Tulu speaking people.WE also would like to know more about the tulu speaking people from were we originated.Dr kamat you have fantastic information for the people of karnataka, keep up the good work.

The picture depicting the wedding that you have under the Mahatmas Photo Album section is incorrect. The picture that you have displayed was taken much later, probably in Gokhale's house in Mumabai on the Mahatma's return from South Africa. It could also have been taken in Sardar Patels chambers. The time period could be anywhere between 1915 and 1918.

Namaste- Your site is very wonderful. Thank you- the leather puppets were intriguing. I too lament the loss of tradition on our poor, abused planet. I am very interested in preserving our environments-natural and human. After many years of observation it is apparent that human overpopulation is the cause of much misery and destruction. I am especially heartened to learn that there is some progress in Mother India as to safe birth control utilizing the wonderous Neem Tree. Have you any knowledge of this? Much appreciation and please continue and remind others to walk lightly on our precious Earth. Be well- c.

I would like to inform you that according to the book In Search of The Cradle of Civilization by Georg Feuerstein, Subhas Kak, and David Frawley the timeline you have posted is far too maodern, Indic civilizations and the Vedic period go far more back in time than is shown, and the book explains why the Aryan invasoin may never have taken place, I hope you read this book, in order to get a clearer sense of time on your timeline.

I believe you may to review your fundamental fact that Aryans were a race. Current research shows it was a way of life of tthe people of the Indian sub-conmtinent and the date is closer to 5000 B.C rather than your 1500 BC invasion hypothesis. For further information key in Indian History on the net read the material and pursue the cross references.

As a parent of two toddlers, I would love to see a section created for the young children, with simple stories, explanations and points of interest. Also, I would be interested in links of some more "how to's" -- I found this site because I was researching rangoli designs to try and attempt and incorporate this tradition into our household. Not much info on how to for the amateur, but lots of interesting information.

Respected Jyotsna Kamat, This is Chanchala from Dallas TX. I felt very happy to read your article 'Shatamaanagalalli kannadati'.As an engineer I was not much interested in history so I didn't have much opportunity to read your hostorical articles. As I mentioned earlier I used to read your humerous literature regularly. Now I am happy that even I am able to read such resourceful articles. But I am a bit disappointed because the article misses the page 4 and pages thereafter. So I request the person taking care of the website to please add the missing pages( I guess it is Vikas Kamat).I congratulate you on highlighting the achievement of women from Karnataka. Thanks a lot.And also thanks for your kind reply to my last mail.I will be more than happy if I can meet you when I visit Bangalore.

Hello Vikas, It's a longtime since i visited your site, busy as i was with my office work ! Let me first congratulate you for making your site a little more simple in appearance ! And the drawing you have put alongside could have been a little better. Now, we at indiawebsites.com have improved our site a lot and i sincerely request you to visit our site and let me know your frank comments. Also, in your latest page on the Kannada kavis, i found the following mistakes : 1. You have spelt Kuvempu as Kuvumpu which is incorrect. His full name stands as Kuppali Venkatappa Puttappa... 2. You have spelt the name of one of the Greatest Dasas of our culture PURANDARADASA incorrectly...please correct it immediately. Also, his compositions are more known as Devaranamas rather than Keerthanas, as the latter requires a more complex writing and is sung with more alapa, etc. Kindly discuss this with your acquaintances and then set it right. 3. Incidentally, almost all Jnanapeetha Award winning Kannada poets have been introduced in your write-up but that very detail is missing ! Please indicate about their award-winning works also. Looking forward for your comments on my above opinions as well as on our website INDIAWEBSITES.COM which is one of the first of its kind, a website directory in short. Do keep in touch. I am an ardent admirer of your humerous literature.I am surprised to see your guest book because no one I mean Kannadigas has ever mentioned your fame in the feild of humor in Kannada literature.Does it mean that kannada literature is loosing its readers.May be I am wrong also. Anyway I found the site according to my expectations from my beloved family.I always am an equal admirer of Krishnanand's arts, though I dont know much about Vikas and his wife. Please keep up the good work. The credit, I guess, goes to the whole Kamat Family. The only suggestion I would like to make is - Please have some articles in Namma Kannada Bhaashe ! I know it would be tough for Vikas, but I think Such a section would add more Value to ur wonderful home page. And readers like me would be more closer to my culture and language. After nearly four decades in America, it is refreshing to see that love for Kannada and Karnataka is living and well. What is more, it is in very good hands as evidenced in your articles. I have a question. It is my understanding that Sati started in India after Islamic invasions -- by fear that young widows may end up in the Harems of Arabia. Late, this was subsumed into religious and social practice. Am I correct? Please correct me if I am mistaken, preferably giving me the dates of the practice in your research. Thanks, and keep up the good work. Narayan.

India is the most fascinating country i have ever visited. A beautiful nation with beautiful people. I have travelled 12 states and 5000 miles across this magnificent gem. I recommend to all those with an open mind to do it!

My cousin and your friend, Jeanne Roth, gave me your address in a message. I clicked, and there it was. It is a most impressive display, the result of much work and even more erudition.

Just finished sending you an e-mail. Then the thought came that you have a Web Site. It's easy for me to reach it with my new set-up. Will check it out in more detail later. Couldn't select from below. You sent me the address!

Hi- I came across your web page in my search for information on Indian women. I was intrigued by the amount of information that you have provided here. I think it is a wonderful opportunity for people like myself to have access to a site such as this. I am an interior design student at Pratt Institute and am working on a research project on the "The role of the Indian woman in the household." I just finished designing a questionairre that I will be distributing to Indian women of different age groups. I would be thrilled if you would take part in this. I hope that you will take it into consideration and e-mail back if interested. Thank you and keep up the good work! :) Julie
