Abstract:The representations of atmospheric water appear not only in Buddhist works but also on the ceilings of the Hindu and Jain caves. The denizens of atmospheric water seen on the ceilings include aquatic birds, fish, water buffaloes, elephants, lotuses, cloud creatures, cloud foliage motifs, and river goddesses. The cloud creatures are also seen in Rajput paintings of the 17th--;18th centuries.
