Abstract:From the 4th century CE, Kanchipuram (or Kanchi) was the capital of the Pallava rulers until the end of the dynasty 500 years later. The Pallavas used the wealth generated by mercantile expansion to develop and expand their empire and to build new temples. The beauty and systematic complexity of the temples designed by the Pallavas at Kanchi are best seen in two of the 8th century: the Kailasanatha temple and the Vaikuntha Perumal temple. Later rulers such as the Cholas and Vijayanagara kings also built a number of temples in Kanchipuram, including the Varadaraja temple. The rituals and ceremonies as well as the festivals associated with Kanchipuram are further discussed in this article.
