Title:The Modern Art Movement Orissa Revisited, edited by Pratapaditya Pal
Author:Sinha, Gayatri
Publication:Marg
Enumeration:Vol. 52-3, p. 131-141
Abstract:Modern art in Orissa has compromised the powerful influence of Calcutta with its own inherited traditions. The essay discusses the life and work of Sarat Chandra Debo (1901-72), Bimbadhar Varma (1901-53), Gopal Kanungo (1904-71), Gaurang Chandra Som, Ajit Keshari, Ananta Panda (b.1934), Dinanath Pathy (b.1942), Ramesh P. Panigrahi, Chandrasekhar Rao (b.1942), Siba Panigrahi (b. 1943), D. Narayan Rao, Ramahari Jena (b. 1955), Jatin Das (b.1941) and Prafulla Mohanti. The themes of their work range from ideas of nation and statehood, to the epic and mythical, folk-tribal-classical, abstract and distorted, historic, landscape, and Orissa's culture aesthetic.
