Abstract:The earliest sources for Vijayanagara belong to the realm of mythology: the site of Hampi is connected with the Ramayana, and there is a legendary account of the foundation of Vijayanagara. The city architecture was designed for protection against repeated wars. The empire served as a bulwark of Hinduism in the south, and encouraged ancient rituals. Portuguese travelers provide an account of the elaborate ceremonies of Krishnadeva Raya and Achutya Raya
