The Pictorialization of a Narrative: the Siege of Lanka Series Ramayana: Pahari Paintings, edited by Roy C. Craven, Jr.,

Title:The Pictorialization of a Narrative: the Siege of Lanka Series Ramayana: Pahari Paintings, edited by Roy C. Craven, Jr.,
Author:Jain-Neubauer, Jutta
Publication:Marg
Enumeration:Vol. 42-1, p. 67- 74
Abstract:In this article some of the narrative devices which the painter might have employed while creating the Ramayana series are discussed. The focus is on how the painter translated the "word" into a visual image. In this context the "word" does not necessarily mean the written text of Valmiki's Ramayana; it was common practice to illustrate those scenes and incidents that were part of the painter's own knowledge. In this sense the picture-series and the spoken or written text were independent, and often different, versions of the ultimate truth that is the Ramayana, the divine revelation that was conveyed to and heard by Valmiki, who revealed it to the world.
