Title:Laharu and Mahesh: Two Master Painters of Chamba Painters of the Pahari Schools, edited by Vishwa Chander Ohri and Roy C. Craven, Jr,
Author:Fischer, Eberhard
Publication:Marg
Enumeration:Vol. 50-1, p. 28-45
Abstract:The writer discusses the art of Laharu and Mahesh, two carpenter-painters settled in Chamba who emerged masters of Pahari painting. They both utilized a notable colour scheme, with Mahesh's style very near to Laharu's. Though it is clear that the two collaborated in designing the reliefs for the Lakshminarayana shrine, it is not known whether they also cooperated in the production of any series of paintings. Laharu's role in the extensive series of paintings for the Bhagavata Purana is detailed. Mahesh belonged to a generation of painters in Chamba that trained in an earlier tradition, but during his lifetime the "new style" emerged, following a close interaction with the Mughal manner of painting.
