Schools of Kathak: A Note on Benaras Gharana and its offshoot in Lahore

Title:Schools of Kathak: A Note on Benaras Gharana and its offshoot in Lahore
Author:Natavara

Enumeration:Vol. 12 Issue no. 4; September 1959, p. 15
Abstract:The gharana of Janki Prasad originated in Rajasthan, but developed and matured in Benaras under the guidance of Janki's descendants. Gopal Das, the son of Janki's brother Ganeshi Lal, played an important role in the development and spread of Kathak in Lahore and the rest of Punjab. The Janki Prasad gharana uses only dance bolas or syllables in nritta, unlike the Jaipur and Lucknow gharanas where the nritta is composed mostly of tabla and pakhawaj bolas.
