The Umarani Usta Master - Painters of Bikaner and their Genealogy Court Painting in Rajasthan, edited by Andrew Topsfield,

Title:The Umarani Usta Master - Painters of Bikaner and their Genealogy Court Painting in Rajasthan, edited by Andrew Topsfield,
Author:Naval, Krishna
Publication:Marg
Enumeration:Vol. 51-3, p. 57-64
Abstract:A conceptual and chronological understanding of Bikaneri paintings is possible only through the structure of painters' families. A clear pyramid of the Bikaneri painting karkhana is now clear. The names of the master painters in long ignored though conspicuous inscriptions are already present on the paintings. However, the uninscribed painters, viz. chelas of the family who were equally instrumental at least in the early stages of production, have been so far ignored. Through information gleaned from hundreds of royal archival bahis (day-to-day diaries) by the author, it becomes clear that the majority of Bikaner's most "illustrious" painters hailed from the Umarani cast/clan of Muslim converts.
