Abstract:The Phoot (solo), Joodi (duet), and Mela (group) dances of Mayurbhanj Chhau developed through the stages of rangbaja, chali, nacha, and natki. The music is inspired by folk and Orissi songs, and the ragas and raginis of Hindustani classical music. The rhythm is provided by various percussion instruments. The article describes the repertoire and mentions some of the past and present exponents of Mayurbhanj Chhau, and its patrons and connoisseurs.
