Abstract:As a part of Rangabhoga or services in the Ranga mantapa or performing hall in a temple, there used to be performances of vocal and instrumental music and dance.The performers included parekars( percussion instrumentalists), players of flute, the sules and the patras. The patras mostly women included a batch of two, three or four and can be a lone person. In Belur temple these women have made grants to the temple.These were dedicated to the temple by common consent.They were not prostitutes., but they might have degenerated at a later stage to take such profession.
