Tiruchirappalli and the Sacred Island of Srirangam

Title:Tiruchirappalli and the Sacred Island of Srirangam
Author:Branfoot, Crispin
Publication:Marg
Enumeration:vol. 51, No. 1, p. 10-24 (September 1999)
Abstract:The temples at Tiruchirappalli and the island of Srirangam, India, are discussed. After considering the myths and foundations of these temples, the writer describes the typology of the south Indian temples from the 13th century onward, which, rather than a single building, often became great complexes of structures dominated by several shrines, columned halls, and towering gateways known as gopuras. He describes the temple complexes dedicated to Raganatha and Jambukeshvara on the island, the former being the largest in the area with seven high stone-walled enclosures laid out in a concentric configuration and gopuras on all four sides, and the latter featuring the majority of its gopuras on only a single east-west axis. He also discusses the Shiva temple set on a rock at Tiruchirappalli and its expansion over the centuries into the current fortresslike walled complex.
