Nalinaksha Sanyal

Dr. Sanyal was born in 1898. He was educated at the Krishnath College, Berhampore and the Presidency College Calcutta. As a student he was a keen sportsman and a profound scholar. He held many scholarships and won many numerous trophies in the open sports.

In 1921 he obtained the only post graduate research scholarship in Arts awarded by the Bengal government. In 1922 he was appointed Professor of Economics in the Krishnath College. Then he took leave and proceeded to London for higher studies. He secured the M.A degree of the London School of Economics in first class and Ph D on the London University. He also had practical training in railway operation and commercial management in the Great Western Railway. He widely traveled on the continent

On his return he joined the Calcutta University as lecture in Transport but the Government vetoed his appointment on other than academic grounds. Then Insurance became the sphere of his interest. He served the New India Assurance Co. the Metropolitican Assurance Co,. And the Hindustan Co-operative Society Ltd. He is now the secretary of the Kalyanpur Lime and Cement Works Ltd.

Dr. Sanyal has courted imprisonment seven times. He was twice arrested in London. He was the chairman of the Reception Committee of the banned session of the Indian National Congress. He was one of the founders of the London Branch of the Congress. He is a brilliant and a forceful writer. He is elected to the Bengal Assembly from the Presidency Division Urban Constituency.

His life is the story of a man sacrificing his prospects for the sake of his principles. He has never torn his convictions into ribbons. He has a large share of energy and is blessed by the good fairies with intellect.

He is not before his age; he is of it. But he is too big to represent the whole of it.
