Introduction

This is the English translation of Dr. Jyotsna Kamat's popular research book on traditional Konkani wedding songs sung by women. Kamat has documented over 500 hovis laboriously collected over a three decade period and woven them into stories, anecdotes, and substantiated them with authentic research. The book recreates the romance of the arranged marriage , the elaborate wedding ceremony and the community feeling that has held together the traditional Gowd Saraswat Society.

The book rapidly saw multiple editions (it was printed in two different scripts, Kannada and Devanagari). Numerous workshops have been conducted based on the book, and a musical CD titled "Ovyo Gavuya" featuring the folk songs was released in 2005.
