Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Narayanaswami, or R.K. Narayan as he is popularly known, is perhaps the most widely read Indian novelists writing in English language.
R.K. Narayan (1906 -2001) was a great storyteller, whose sensitive and graphic portrayals of twentieth-century Indian life were set mostly in the fictional South Indian town of Malgudi. Most of Narayan's work, starting with his first novel Swami and Friends (1935), captures many Indian ethos while having a unique identity of its own. His "Indian Epics Retold"
re-narrates the magnificence of Indian mythologies such as Mahabharat and Ramayan.
