Blind folded Gandhari and a Maid on Balcony
The Sacrifice of Gandhari
Painting by Nandalal Bose

Gandhari, the wife of Dhritarashrta is a very interesting character from Mahabharat. Married to a blind man, she thought she should not enjoy any luxuries of life that are denied to the husband, and blinded herself with a cloth. Artist Bose, one of India's most famous, illustrates Gandhari using a girlfriend (sakhi) to learn the whereabouts from a balcony.
