Tibetans in India
First Online: October 19, 2006
Although not legally naturalized as Indians, a large numbers of Tibetans live in India in refugee centers and in rehabilitation centers. Many are indeed born and brought up India and experience what it is like to live in a free country. They long to return to their homeland, occupied by China in 1959. But their voice is weak, as they have no representation.
For students of anthropology, the Tibetans in India have carried on an Indian lifestyle that has since disappeared in India itself! The Tibetans are mostly Buddhists, a faith born and prospered in India, but no longer a dominant religion. Similarly, the traditions of education, practice of epheramal arts and spirituality is continued by the Tibetans.
