Abstract:The question of whether the Chidambaram Nataraja icongraphical type crystallized under the Pallavas or the Cholas is a matter of debate. This article reconstructs the process whereby the Nataraja image appeared in Tamil Nadu and matured into a cult image with strong emblematic associations with Chidambaram and the Chola royal household. Through the catalogue of commissioned images the ascending status of the Nataraja cult in Tamil Nadu can be understood, along with its links first with the Pallava rulers and then the early Chola rulers of the Kaveri region.
