Abstract:Both Hindustani and Karnatak music flourish side by side in Karnataka. Early Kannada and Tamil literary texts, and inscriptions, throw interesting light on the musical life of those times. The Vijayanagara kings provided a new impetus to the development of the arts, including music; several musical compositions were produced during their rule on Karnataka. After the Vijayanagara kings, the Maharajas of Mysore continued the tradition of patronising both Karnatak and Hindustani music.
