Ruins of Hampi (Editorial)

Title:Ruins of Hampi (Editorial)
Author:Garimella, Annapurna
Publication:Marg
Enumeration:Vol. 54 Issue no. 4, June 2003, p. 10-11
Abstract:Who decides what is a ruin and what is a monument is often a question of power. The bickering among the many present-day benefactors of the heritage site of Hampi - the Karnataka state government, UNESCO, intellectuals, and tourism developers --; does not accommodate the complexities of the everyday life of Hampi's residents. Ultimately answers to the question whom does it serve to pit conservation against occupation and history against modernity will configure the past and future definitions of heritage.
