Abstract:Early Tamil literature shows that there was a mural tradition in Tamil Nadu in the early Common era. However, the oldest surviving paintings of the region are preserved in the Kailasanatha temple built by Pallava Rajasimha in c. 700. The following phases of Tamil paintings are represented at Sittannavasal, under the patronage of the Pandya ruler Sri Mara Sri vallabha (first half of 9th century); the temple of Vijayalayacholesvara at Narthamalai (c. 860); the great temple of Thanjavur built by Raja Chola I c.1010; the temple at Srirangam built by Hoysala Veera Ramanatha in 1220; temples of the Vijayanagara period at Thiruvannamalai, Kanchipuram, and Thiruvellarai; and temples at Thiruppudaimarudur (16th century), Gingee, Chengam, Thanjavur, Madurai, and other centres of the Nayakas (c. 1600), and the Thanjavur Palace complex, of the Maratha period (17th-19th centuries).
