Abstract:A reconstruction of the socio-religious customs and the economic and political situation in south India in the pre-Vijayanagara and Vijayanagara periods, based on the chronicles of the contemporary travellers Isami, Marco Polo, Ibn Battuta, Nuniz, Paes, Salatore, and Nicolo Conti. The economic prosperity and riches of the Yadavas, Kakatiyas, Hoysalas, and Pandyas at the close of the 13th century encouraged invasions from the northern Sultanates of the Khaljis and Tughluqs. The southern resistance against these incursions ultimately led to the establishment of the Vijayanagara empire in the first half of the 14th century. Hampi became the seat of imperial power, and an important centre of socio-economic and artistic activity.
