Madurai Temple Towns of Tamil Nadu, edited by George Michell,

Title:Madurai Temple Towns of Tamil Nadu, edited by George Michell,
Author:Fuller, C.J.
Publication:Marg
Enumeration:Vol. 44-3, p. 94-113
Abstract:Madurai is one of the oldest cities in India. The Minakshi-Sundareshvara temple is situated in Madurai. It is known simply as the Minakshi temple, owing to the goddess' pre-eminence and popularity in Madurai. Mainly because it is located in a large thriving city, the temple continues to be a vibrant place of worship. The Minakshi temple is a classic example of the south Indian Vijayanagara-Nayaka style, and almost the entire complex as seen today was built during the Nayaka period. The article discusses the following sections: Layout of the Temple, Festivals and Processions, Coronation and Marriage Festivals, and Sacred Space of the Madurai Region.
