Tamil Nad -- Classical Bhagavata Mela Dance-Drama

Title:Tamil Nad -- Classical Bhagavata Mela Dance-Drama
Author:Iyer, E. Krishna
Publication:Marg
Enumeration:Vol. 19 Issue no. 2; March 1966, p. 4-12
Abstract:The Bhagavata Mela dance-drama tradition at Melatur in Tanjavur district is the link between ancient and modern theatre in India. It is a revival of the ancient Natya conception adumbrated by Bharata's Natya Sastra in the 2nd century, and this revival was given shape by the Andhra saint Theertha Narayana in the 16th century. His followers in the succeeding generations continued the tradition, which had reached its pinnacle during the time of Venkatarama Sastriar (c. 1800), a senior contemporary of Thyagaraja. In course of time, the tradition survived only at Melatur, and the author was himself involved at this centre. The performance of contemporary Bhagavata Mela Natakas is described.
