Title:Painting in Kutch: Surprises and Delight The Arts of Kutch, edited by Christopher W. London,

Abstract:Rao Lakhpatji (1741-60) played a pivotal role in the growth and development of painting in Kutch. Paintings in Kutch belong to two groups: the sub-royal paintings of darbar scenes, processionals, miniatures, and portraits, all with an element of formality; and the landscape paintings which are invested with so much warmth. The later group was influenced by the European prints and engravings which came into Kutch through the sailor and craftsman Ramsingh Malam in the second quarter of the 18th century. Initially the European prints led to copies of the European cityscapes, later, the landscapes included views of the towns and topography of the region itself.
