Abstract:A largely overlooked feature, Kathakali music is the very essence of a Kathakali performance as it provides the basic material for the dancer to enact. Troups of Kathakali songs or padams are linked by slokams or dandakams and a single work contains a number of songs. Kathakali music is closely related to Carnatic music, though it some of the ragas are of Tamil origin and the Sopana style of singing is distinctive. Sung to a slow tempo, the ponani (main) and sinkidi (secondary) musicians, sing from dusk till dawn, accompanying themselves with metal song and cymbals. Other percussion instruments are the chenda and maddalam distinct to Kerala. Though criticized sometimes by fastidious theorists, Kathakali songs are numerous, their composers poets of excellent merit, and their singers exponents of a rich kaleidoscope of music. Some famous singers and drummers are listed at the end of the article.
