In Search of a Football Ground in Twentieth Century Urban Bengal

Title:In Search of a Football Ground in Twentieth Century Urban Bengal
Author:Bandyopadhyay, Kausik
Publication:Soccer and Society
Enumeration:Vol. 6 Issue 1, p69, 10p, Spring 2005
Abstract:This essay attempts to analyse the complex relationship between geography and Indian football. It contends that football ground/stadia development/re-development, largely and continuously influenced by environmental factors such as weather patterns or nature of the local landscape, reflects the emotional attachment, social control, political design and economic transformation of the Indian nation, a factor given little importance in existing writings on Indian sport. It also argues that beyond the fascinating story of the game's internal geography, lies an external factor no less interesting and goes on to suggest that the problems of open space utilization have significantly influenced football's fortunes in urban India.
