Abstract:Four new diets were tested for the mass rearing of sorghum stem borer,Chilo zonellus Swinhoe and were compared with Keaster and Harrendorf`s diet. The data on the development of the borer for two generations showed that of all the diets tested, kabuli gram diet proved to be the most suitable rearing medium. The larvae reared on this diet were much healthier, larger percentage of larvae reached adult stage and the females laid more eggs. The components of the kabuli gram stage and the females laid more eggs. The components of the kabuli gram diet are locally available and it is much cheaper than the Keaster and Harendorf`s diet. Also there was no fungus development on the fomer diet which is a handicap in the latter diet.
