Abstract:Maldives islands situated in the Indian Ocean had commercial contacts in the medieval times with Africa, west Asia and Arab countries is a known factor. But only recently in the Mustafa Kamal Pasha Palace Library in Istanbul the evidences in the form of two maps have been found. One shows the various islands around Maldivs, the other identifies some place names of west coast of India such as Cochin, Kalika (Kallikote) Tavanur, Kanarado,(Kasargod), Mangalore, Bakanor (Barakur), Barcelore (Basrur), Honnavara etc with trade contacts. Interestingly Francois Pyrard who visited India in 1660 mentions these maps. The findings of Buddhist Chaitya in Maldives have furthered the need for excavations and studies about how and from where Buddhism spread in these parts.
