Jnanranjan Sarkar

Mr. Jnanranjan Sarkar was born at Rajashahi in 1907. Early in life he lost his mother. So he was reared under the loving care of his uncle, who led the austere life of an ascetic. He instilled patriotic ideas into his nephew's mind.

Mr. Jnanranjan Sarkar joined the Ripon's college where he rose to posthumous fame. He joined the Second Calcutta University Training Corps as a private soldier and received military training. He was made a non-commissioned officer in the St. John Ambulance Brigade. He stood first in the All Bengal Ambulance Competition. He displayed unequalled tact in organizing the student movement.

In 1930 he participated in the C.D Movement. As the captain of the Volunteer Corps he organised the campaign at Pabna. He won a permanent place in the affections of the youth by founding the Pabna National Militia. Streams of young men poured in form all parts of Bengal to receive training. The organization was later on affiliated to the Hindustani Seva Dal. He was arrested while returning after waving good bye to Sjt. Subash Chandra Bose. Again he was arrested in 1932 and was sentenced to one year's rigorous imprisonment. After his release he was clapped in prison for one more year.

From 1934-1937 he was elected the Secretary of the Pabna District Congress Committee. Since 1935 he is a member of the B.P.C.C. He was also a member of the provincial parliamentary board. In 1936 he was elected the member of the A.I.C.C. As the secretary of the Sitlai Bratee Sangh he has done excellent work. He is the Agent of the All India village industries association at Pabna.

Mr. Jnanranjan's career bears bright witness that even in a materialistic age ideals of duty are living forces still.
