Biography: Thakkar Bapa

Amrutlal V. Thakkar, commonly known as Thakkar Bapa, was a friend; guide and philosopher of Adivasis and the downtrodden sections of society condemned to untouchability. An engineer by training and member of Gokhale's Servants of India Society, he institutionalized the work for their enlistment by setting up co-operative societies for sweepers and scavengers in Pune and schools for the children of labors in Ahemadabad. Statutory provision in the constitution for safeguarding interests of Harijans and substantially the fruit of his efforts.
