Photographer Umrao Singh Sher-Gil

Although more famous as the father of artist Amrita Sher-Gil, Umrao Singh Sher-Gil (1870-1954) was one of the pioneers of photography in India, especially in the area of self-portraiture. He was a man with multiple interests from astronomy to technology, and must have experimented with the camera as a hobby. Most his works feature his family members in interesting settings and ambiance.
