First Online: March 23, 2002

Dr. K. L. Kamat was a very colorful person and has been the subject
of many a humorous short stories by my mother Jyotsna Kamat. I have compiled the following cartoons and caricatures to illustrate artists' depiction of
Kamat. Many are in fact, drawn by Kamat himself (self caricatures) but many
others are by professional artists commissioned by various publications. I
thank each of them for providing entertaining, yet truthful depictions of my father. -

Kamat, Family Humorist
Most caricatures of Kamat involved humorous situations with wife Jyotsna -- arguing and finding joy in simple matters
of life.

To Shoot a Flying Bird
Kamat was an avid bird watcher and has taken thousands of
photographs of birds. This particular
article illustrates how Kamat got arrested for photographing birds at
a United Nations University.

CameRasputin
Kamat took great joy in identifying himself with, and photographing the
street children of India.
After he distributed their pictures, the
homeless kids would follow him everywhere he go.

The Anonymous Cameraman
Throughout his life, Kamat kept such a low profile, that
very few people knew who he was. In this self caricature, Kamat is
photographing a model, without identifying himself.

Kamat the Vegetable Buyer
Kamat went to the local vegetable and fruit market everyday for
thirty-two years. He was quite an enigma among the roadside vendors. They
called him as the "Late Night Restaurateur", "Photo
Uncle", and "Friend of the Poor".
Caricature shows Kamat buying more vegetables than he can consume.

Kamat Cooker! Kamat was an excellent, and efficient cook.
He did not have a refrigerator, and hence the Kamats had to cook often.
The caricature shows Kamat using the traditional Indian knife (stationary
knife) while operating a pressure cooker on a kerosene stove. Kamat

Kamat Pickles Factory
Kamat was an expert pickle-maker with mangoes and lemon pickles being
his specialties. Kamat's pickles were highly sought after among friends
and relatives, and have been used as bribe to patch marriages, and close
business deals.
Kamat also used to prepare a dry pickle from a bitter fruit called Kaddu-Narag,
that was used in the family to cure loss of appetite and as a dietary
aid.
